DC2UNI is a Non-Profit startup formed by Carly Holmes during her junior year at The University of Maryland, College Park. A native of Southeast Washington, D.C. she read a report by DC Policy Center stating that 25% of DC High School Student will graduate from high school and enroll in college but not graduate. Only 14% of DC High School students will graduate from high school and college. In comparison to 66.2% of Americans enrolling into college on average (U.S. BLS) and 41% of those students graduating. (NCES) These statistics are discouraging, but we can create change. That's why DC2UNI was started, to help students not just get to college, which is often the main and only focus of high schools in this area, but get them THROUGH college.
Afterwards we want to bring these graduates back to DC to become leaders and representatives within our community, working on the issues harming our city including gentrification, violence, educational inequality, poverty, etc. We also want DC natives to be represented, seen, and heard everywhere in Washington, from local government and politics to the federal level. From local businesses to large corporations, non-profits, businesses, activism, and more. We will create seats at the table and, when needed, make our own table until all DC residents are represented and given a chance. Our goal is to raise the rates of DC increase college enrollment rate to 50% by 2027, college graduation rates to 54% by 2032 and bring 75% of the students subscribed to our mailing list back to DC after graduating college. We hope to do this by providing DC Natives in high school and college with:
